Disclaimer: This post is my own personal opinions and I by no means intend to offend anyone. (Although I don’t think I have, but I feel like I should say that just in case).
Let me just start this post by saying, I am pro diversity in books. I think that books should represent different aspects of life (cultures, race, sexuality, disability etc.). Rarely in a Young Adult novel will you find a character that is not described as being “the plain skinny white girl” (obviously authors are much better at describing than I am, but you get the idea). Don’t get me wrong, I know there are books out there that do deal with diverse issues, but they aren’t as common as they should be.
I know there are quite a few books coming out now dealing with LGBT issues. Some of the more recent releases include: Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and More Happy Than Not and.. I can’t actually think of any others right now but I know there are plenty. I’m not going to lie; I’m not a huge fan of reading about gay couples. Before you all get out your pitchforks, it’s nothing about gay people in general; it’s just not something I like to personally read. When I read, I enjoy books more when I better relate to the characters, and I find that easier if these characters have similar character traits as me. But with that aside, the few books I have read that have gay couples, I have really enjoyed. One of my favourite books The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan, which was not necessarily about a gay couple, sort of hinted at it and I thought that it was done amazingly well.
On the other hand, there’s diversity in books that feels like it’s been added in simply to please people. This is usually found in the minor characters in the books like the main character’s friends or parents, where the author might make the character have gay parents, or the main character’s best friend might be of colour, but rarely is the main character anything but the “typical straight Caucasian” which I think needs to change, especially in Young Adult literature which is incredibly influential for today’s youth. It would be a great way to educate people and open their eyes to some of the issues people face in the world, which they might be ignorant of.
I haven't read very many, but here are some books that I think deal with some diverse topics really well:
