Carina Conte has had a crush on her brother Michael’s best friend, Max Gray, since she was a teenager. Now she’s earned her MBA and come to work at Michael’s new venture, America’s fastest-growing bakery empire. But some things never change: her family still treats her like a child. With three drop-dead gorgeous siblings, she’s still the ugly duckling of the bunch. And Max, the company’s new CEO, still barely notices her.
Max knows Carina Conte is strictly off limits. But hot-blooded lust wins out at a conference when the two share a scorching one-night stand—and are busted by her mother! Now, forced by old-world Italian tradition into a marriage he’s not ready for, Max is miserable—and Carina is furious. Her new husband is about to realize that hell hath no fury like a woman transformed….
I had read the first book in this series 'The Marriage Bargain' in 2013 and I remember really enjoying that one. So I decided to pick this one up, which is the third book but I didn't realise that until I was about half way through... YOLO. Anyway, I thought it was a decent book but it didn't blow me away.
There were definitely issues I had with the romance, particularly the way (name) treated (name). If you are a strong feminist I highly recommend you avoid this book. Seriously. I also think that the actual base of the plot was a little silly and unrealistic. It also didn't even happen until 3/4 of the way through the book.
Having said all of that however, I didn't go into this story expecting a masterpiece, and therefore I cannot rate it against one. I was looking for a light quick read to get me out of a slump, and that is exactly what it was.
The reason for my rating however, is I feel the plot dragged on quite a bit. There were definitely some boring parts for me that I wasn't really interested in, and I often found myself skipping scenes both the main characters weren't in. I also felt like I didn't get to know the characters that well, so I didn't really grow attacked to them. However, I enjoyed the story for the most part and I think minus the few issues I had with the plot itself, it was a good story with potential to be something great.
If you are looking for a story that you can read quickly and not really have to think about it, I would recommend this. However I think there are definitely some better New Adult books out there that would be more enjoyable to read.
