So this month, I read a total of 10 books, which is a new record for me. Anyway, even though it is past the time where people "wrap up" their month of books, I thought I'd share mine anyway :)
The first book I read this month was Landline by Rainbow Rowell, and what a way to start off the year. I originally began listening to this as an audiobook but then it was too slow for me and I knew I had to devour it so I got the eBook and finished it off that night. The story is basically about a husband and wife who are having troubles in their marriage because the wife is more focused on work than the family. Anyway, the husband takes their kids to Nebraska with his family while Georgie stays behind to work. She doesn't think anything is wrong until her mother tells her that her husband said they were on a break. Georgie then obviously tries to contact her husband but cannot get a hold of him... until she finds the old landline in her bedroom... aaaand you'll just have to read it to find out what happens :) I gave this book a 5/5 star rating on Goodreads, and it has made it into my all time favourite books, so what does that tell you?
I just realised if I keep writing reviews like that this is going to be a long post, so I will try and keep them short :)
The next book I read was The Intern by Gabrielle Tozer. This is an Australian book about a young girl interning at a Sydney fashion magazine office (I think it's Sydney anyway). This was a really nice book, and a quick read. It wasn't fantastic, and there were a few things that bothered me about it such as the way some people were portrayed in the book, however it was a quick read and I would recommend this to any Young Adult fans. 3.5/5
This next book I started in December but I just couldn't finish it. Finally I did and unlike a lot of people, I wasn't too fussed on it. The book was Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. Now, I thought this book had so much potential, however I thought it was really boring. The writing was way too sophisticated for a YA book in my opinion, and I found it was a bit confusing the way it was written. I wouldn't recommend this book, 2.5/5
One of the Guys by Lisa Aldin. This book was sent to me by the publisher, and I really enjoyed it. The main character annoyed me a bit but she developed well throughout the book and by the end I actually started to like her. I gave this book 3.5/5 because while I did like the book, I thought that it was pretty unrealistic for high school students, and that kind of annoys me when books are unrealistic.
Next up is Me Before You by Jo Jo Moyes. This was a fantastic book, with a great plot. It follows30 something year old Lou who has just lost her job, with no idea what she wants to do. She then finds out about a very well paid job looking after a quadraplegic man. She is a bit hesitant at first but she gives it a go. I don't want to give anything away but I definitely recommend this book, you won't regret it. 4.5/5
My 6th book of the month was Charade by Nyrae Dawn. This was recommended by my friend Jess, well not really recommended to me but she wrote a review and it was so good that I just knew I had to read it. And boy am I glad I did. This book. Just. I don't even know how to explain this book but it was great. It is a New Adult book so not really for the younger readers (although who am I to say what you should and shouldn't read). But seriously, if you want a good NA book which has realistic themes and isn't one of those books where the couple is constantly breaking up and getting back together, then this is the book for you. 4/5.
The DUFF by Kodi Keplinger was my next read. I had heard so many mixed reviews about this book that I didn't really want to read it, then one day I sat down and decided to read it and just wow. At first, I didn't like the book, I found it to be cliched and obvious but then I read on a bit and I realised that that was the intention. Kodi Keplinger has seriously written a masterpiece. The message this book gives is definitely one I can relate to, and honestly it has changed my way of thinking. Seriously, read the book. Don't watch the movie. Read the book. That is all. 4.5/5
This next book I won in a giveaway on Facebook by Allen and Unwin. It is, Love and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo. I thought this was a great book, it portrayed life as a 15 year old girl perfectly, it also portrayed life as a 21 year old uni student perfectly,AND it portrayed life in Australia, you guessed it, perfectly. If you want to read a book about all those things, read this one. 3.5/5
After by Anna Todd. Again, I had heard so many mixed reviews about this book, and I'm still not sure whether I liked it or not. I gave it 4/5 stars but I'm not sure. It was a good book even though the relationship in the book was not a very healthy one, but yeah, still not sure about this. I have yet to write a review on this so once I do, I will let you all (lol who am I kidding no one is reading this) know.
Finally, my final book of the month was *drumrolls please* Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy. I bet that was a bit of a let down for you. This was a good book. Not a favourite but it wasn't bad. It was about a girl who gets diagnosed with cancer and she wants to get revenge on a bunch of people before she dies so she enlists the help of an old family friend she hasn't spoken to since they started high school. I would have liked this book a lot more but I just felt that the main character, even though she had her reasons, was such a whiny bitch. She was intentionally cruel and she was just using her friend. I don't know, I liked the book but I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone. 3.5/5
And that my friends, is it! Wow, if you made it this far thank you so much for reading all of that, I hope I have been able to give you some new books to read or to avoid. Let me know in the comments what books you read this month. Also, have you read any of these? What did you think of them? Please let me know!
Til next time, Terri x
