Forced to remain in a relationship with the dangerous and corrupt Asa Jackson, Sloan will do whatever it takes to make sure her brother has what he needs.
Nothing will get in her way.
Nothing except Carter.
Sloan is the only good thing to ever happen to Asa. He knows this and he never plans on letting her go; even if she doesn't approve of his lifestyle. But despite Sloan's disapproval, Asa knows what it takes to get what he wants. He knows what he needs to do to remain on top.
Nothing will get in his way.
Nothing except Carter
First of all I just want to say that if you are triggered by sexual abuse and domestic violence (or anything along those lines) don't read this book. This book was so completely messed up. I've never read a book that actually made me feel so sick. I mean, yes it's Colleen Hoover and I like the writing but certain aspects of this book I think she took way too far. For starters, there was rape throughout the entirety of the story. It wasn't romanticised or anything like that, but I just think it wasn't completely necessary.
The story itself and the plot, I really liked. It was very suspenseful and I was enjoying it enough to continue reading it. This was also a very dark novel, with very graphic sex scenes. Nothing like anything Colleen Hoover has written before. The thing that really made me sick was in the 2nd epilogue. I don't want to give anything away but I am honestly just disgusted by what happened and what they did. I've seen comments from people saying how they were really happy with the ending and what happened etc. but I don't care if it was deserved or not they just took it way too far and I am so not impressed at all. (Side note, I wrote that a couple of weeks ago and I am STILL disgusted about what they did) It could have been left out of the story and it would have been completely fine. But because of that final scene it sort of ruined the story for me and for that, I'm annoyed.
I did find it interesting that the book was told from three different perspectives. It was kind of sick (not as in fully sick) reading from Asa P.O.V (the abuser) and reading his motives and thoughts etc. But it was definitely unique. I didn't particularly love or hate the other two characters. I wasn't very emotionally invested in the story(invested enough to read and finish within a day though).
Overall, if you're a fan of CoHo and you want to read it I'm not going to say not to by just be aware, this story definitely is not for everyone. This is definitely very different from any of her other books. There are strong themes of sexual, mental and physical abuse, mental health issues and a lot of drug use. In my opinion, it in no way reflects these situations in a respectful or accurate manner particularly because of the romance in the book. I know that the romance is in the book to make it interesting, but it does take away from the real issues in the story. Although I know that it is fiction, so I'm not going to hold that against the book.
This book is free on Wattpad (just google Colleen Hoover, Wattpad and you'll find it). it's great because it's free, so at least you won't waste any money if you don't end up liking it. CoHo is still one of my favourite (if not my number 1 favourite) authors don't get me wrong, and I don't regret reading this. It just was not what I expected.
