Livie walks into Princeton with a solid plan, and she’s dead set on delivering on it: Rock her classes, set herself up for medical school, and meet a good, respectable guy that she’s going to someday marry. What isn’t part of her plan are Jell-O shots, a lovable, party animal roommate she can’t say ‘no’ to, and Ashton, the gorgeous captain of the men’s rowing team. Definitely him. He’s an arrogant ass who makes Livie’s usually non-existent temper flare and everything she doesn’t want in a guy. Worse, he’s best friends and roommates with Connor, who happens to fits Livie’s criteria perfectly. So why does she keep thinking about Ashton?
As Livie finds herself facing mediocre grades, career aspirations she no longer thinks she can handle, and feelings for Ashton that she shouldn’t have, she’s forced to let go of her last promise to her father and, with it, the only identity that she knows.
I've been on a real K. A. Tucker kick lately and I thought I would try to continue the Ten Tiny Breaths series. I had read about 50 pages of One Tiny Lie 6 months ago, but got a bit bored with the story. But as I finished the Burying Water series, I realised I needed to read more of K. A. Tucker's books, so I decided to give this another chance.
Now, don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the story. The writing was captivating and it kept me hooked, and the plot was interesting. It was something unique which I liked. But what really ruined this book for me was the romance. The romance between Ask and Livie was great. BUT it was based on lies. For pretty much the whole book, Livie is with another man, and Ash is with another girl. And that just pissed me the hell off. I understood Ash's reasoning behind his relationship and while I still didn't agree and I can definitely see why he did what he did. But with Livie there was absolutely no excuse other than the fact that she was a greedy bitch. I liked Livie and her personality, but this side of her just made me strongly dislike her. So as a New Adult novel (where the whole story is based around the romance) I was not impressed. And to be honest, I'm a little bit shocked that this seems to be a lot of people's favourite novels from this series. It would make sense if Connor (Livie's ACTUAL BOYFRIEND THAT SHE WAS CHEATING ON) was a complete arsehole but he wasn't. He was such a nice person. And she's got to be completely stupid if she thought that him saying they would "take it slow" meant that they could date other people. How does she get that out of that??? ANd she knew, she bloody KNEW that Connor wasn't for her and she KNEW that she wanted to be with Ashton! Yet she continued to cheat on Connor and go behind his back all the while feeling "so guilty". If she was feeling that guilty she should have broken things off with the guy as soon as she realised he wasn't for her. I'm sorry but it just really pisses me off.
Two other issues I had with this story that lead me to enjoying it less:
1. The characters seemed very immature (not even including the whole cheating bull crap) and I just didn't feel very connected with them. I didn't not like them but I just didn't really care for them.
2. The story ended very abruptly and I didn't feel like anything was actually resolved properly. From the epilogue I can obviously tell that things were solved, but as teh reader who sat through the entirety of the book I feel like I should have seen how they got to be where they ended up.
Overall, I disliked more than I actually liked with this book and so I don't think I can actively recommend it to anyone. I don't regret reading it, and I didn't have a terrible time while reading it so I'm not going to rate it too harshly. I think apart from the cheating aspect I could have looked past any other issues I had and really enjoyed the story, but alas the characters cheated and I was pissed.
