For Macallan and Levi, it was friends at first sight. Everyone says guys and girls can’t be just friends, but these two are. They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan’s friends. They are platonic and happy that way.
Eventually they realize they’re best friends — which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t keep getting in each other’s way. Guys won’t ask Macallan out because they think she’s with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can’t help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?
I had heard about this book, but wasn’t really interested in reading it until I was watching a YouTuber the other day talk about it, and it sounded right up my alley. Basically it’s a story about best friends falling in love. I know there’s a lot of books where the characters are friends before they get together but I haven’t read anything where they are best friends for years before getting together.
I thought I would really like it but I just feel like it was so boring. There were so many things about this book that really annoyed me and by the end, I really didn’t like it.
So first up, I didn’t like how it was written. It’s a dual perspective told from the point of view of the girl and the boy. The story is narrated as if the characters themselves are telling the story, but it’s still in first person. I’m not sure about anyone else who’s read this, but I felt like the tense that was used was all off. At the end of each chapter it would become present tense (I think) and Levi and Macallen would talk about what happened, and I’m sure it was meant to be cute banter, but it was awkward and sometimes cringe worthy. I really didn’t like the tone of the book and the characters weren’t very likable.
Macallen was annoying, selfish and needy, and Levi was such an ignorant try hard. Half the book was him trying to appear more manly so he'd ditch Macallen for months because it wasn't cool to hang out with girls. Levi and Macallen also were obsessed with some stupid UK show that obviously only they liked they would constantly quote the how back and forth. I understand having a common interest like that, but it took over every single conversation they had. It was so annoying! And then people around them would say things like “why aren't you two dating yet” or “does anybody ever have a clue what you two go on about”. I'm sure if it were two girls or two guys doing that, no one would bat an eye.
In the book, Levi and Macallen have relationships with other people, but then they hang out with each other and completely ignore their partners and don’t understand why they get the shits about it. They were just so disrespectful. When Levi got home from a holiday, he lied to his girlfriend and told her his plane arrived several hours later just so he could go see Macallen first. Macallen even admitted the only reason she was with someone was to “hope my feelings for Levi would go away”. I just can't even.
Then throughout the whole book they keep saying “why can’t guys and girls be just friends” but then the story completely contradicts that by making out that they can’t. I really like the idea of two best friends falling in love, but when they make out that that’s the only result of the friendship, then it just annoys me.
In some ways this book was relatable, but overall it was boring, the writing was awkward, the characters were annoying and the plot was predictable and uneventful. I wouldn’t recommend this. I’m starting to feel like I must have missed something about this book, because everyone I’ve seen talking about this have absolutely loved it. Maybe these are the people who have never had friends of the opposite sex? I don’t know. Bloody ridiculous I tell you.
