Ebony Marshall is in her final year of high school. Five months, two weeks and four days . . . She can't wait to leave the town where she's known only as ‘Black'. Because of her name, of course. But for another reason, too.
Everyone says Black Marshall is cursed.
Three of her best friends have died in tragic accidents. After Oscar, the whispers started. Now she's used to being on her own. It's easier that way.
But when her date for the formal ends up in intensive care, something in quiet little Dainsfield starts to stir. Old secrets are revealed and terrifying new dangers emerge.
If only Black could put all the pieces together, she could work out who her real enemies are. Should she run for her life, or stay and fight?
Last year I read Risk by Fleur Ferris, and I absolutely loved that book. I found that book to be such an important and moving read, that when I found out Fleur was writing a second book, I was super duper excited. So even though this book came out in July, I am only just now getting to it. I had no idea what it was about, but I was expecting something along the lines of the last book. Needless to say, I was a bit shocked to find out it was a suspense/mystery fiction type book. But, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
So tonight (Thursday), I decided at random to pick this book up. 1.5 hours later here I am. I honestly don't think I've ever read a book that quick in my life! I literally devoured this book. I found it was super duper suspenseful and it had me unable to put it down. I never read the blurb, so I had no idea what the book was about going into it, and so basically everything was a shock to me.
I did find that towards the middle, thing were dragging out a bit and I just wanted to find out what was going on. But the writing kept me intrigued, and I thought it was an interesting plot line that kept me guessing the whole time.
Personally, I like a bit more romance in my books, so to me there definitely wasn't enough romance. I would have liked some more build up and back story of Black and Ed. I thought throwing Aidan into the mix was also interesting.
I won't go as far to say I was disappointed in the story, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. That said, I haven't read a good suspense novel in a long time, and I really enjoyed this. The characters were great, could have been more developed but the fact that they weren't added to the suspense and fast pacing of the novel. The plot was interesting and kept me hooked from page one, and I enjoyed the Australian setting and that it wasn't too over the top. Some Aussie books I read it's almost like they're playing up all the typical Aussie stereotypes, but with this I feel like anyone from any country could pick it up and really enjoy it.
