Do not be fooled! I haven’t actually read anything in about a month I’m just only now finding time to actually write this review up! Anywho, I read this book in August and I liked it a fair amount.
I read the book in a few hours, so it was definitely a very quick read. Lately I haven’t really been enjoying reading books from the Young Adult age group, so I wasn’t really expecting much from it. I did end up liking it, but it does have a few elements that are always in YA, which has been turning me off of it lately. Just things like the cheesiness of it all and the awkwardness that comes along with teenagers.
The book is basically about this tom boy girl who is the quarterback on the boys football team (which is totally realistic right?). It deals with some family drama, such as her dad not approving of her wanting to go to college for football (how unreasonable of him…). Enter Ty, who is new to town and is also a quarterback. Will he take Jordan’s place on the team?!? Will Jordan get into the college of her dreams?! And most importantly, the question on everyone’s lips. Will Jordan get involved in a love triangle that is so ridiculously frustrating? Yes. Yes she will. Because this is YA and how can you possibly have drama without a love triangle??
I have read book 4 of this series (Breathe Annie Breathe) which I also really enjoyed. I picked up on a few inconsistencies in the writing which I think was most likely the result of it being book 1. I also felt like the ending wrapped up way too fast, I didn’t really feel like anything was resolved. Honestly, why do authors wait to the last 50 pages or so for everything to happen at once, and then wrap everything up so everyone lives happily ever after in the last chapter? I find this is more common in YA than any other genre. It usually also follows up with an epilogue that takes place 6 months after the book ends showing us how happy the main characters are now. I just think you spend the whole book getting to know the characters, getting attached to them, going through all the drama with them only to be left with a chapter that’s basically a “and they all lived happily ever after the end”. Getting back on track though the ending didn’t really make sense for the story.
The main character was also very immature and bouncing back and forth between two guys. Pretty sure she even said something like "well I'm not going to leave x if x won't be with me". Which is ridiculous because she went 17 years without a boyfriend and now she suddenly has to choose between the boy she loves (and knows she loves), and some guy that she doesn’t really like but is staying with him because it’s cool to have a boyfriend. I suppose that YA for you though. Also lots of drama! But again, that is YA for you :P
So from that review you probably think I didn’t really like the book, but I actually did enjoy it. It was an easy read where I didn’t really have to focus and I could just get invested in the drama which was exactly what I needed at the time.
