I have only read two other David Levithan books and I didn’t really enjoy them, so I’m not sure what made me pick this one up but I am really glad I did. His writing style is completely different in this, which is the main problem I had with him before so that was great.
This book is about a boy? Girl? You don’t really know but their name is A and every day they wake up in a new body. I thought this concept was so interesting. This is mainly a contemporary romance which I really enjoy but I actually found myself liking the parts where he would wake up as someone new the most interesting. Like one day he woke up as a really overweight man and he couldn’t even sit up because he wasn’t used to all of the extra weight.
“My only course of rebellion is to leave her eyebrows unplucked for the day” - A has a very dry sense of humour and I just loved it.
I thought it was a really funny, very fast paced book, but it also dealt with some serious issues like suicide, depression, abuse etc. and I thought it was done very tastefully. David Levithan is also known for his LGBT books, and this had quite a bit of that which was nice, and wasn’t over the top. At the start I did think it went a bit quickly, but it evened out a little towards the middle.
I didn’t really like the romance in it, it seemed very unrealistic and I don’t particularly like Rhiannon but she could be worse. There is another book that just came out I think which continues the story, but I’m not sure I will be reading it. Just because I don’t really like Rhiannon and I think it’s all about her in that one. But I’ll definitely be giving David Levithan’s books another go.
