I read this about a week ago because I was in a bit of a reading slump and I thought, who better to get me out of a slump than Sarah Dessen? I normally really enjoy her books, so I was surprised when I really didn’t like Keeping the Moon.
Keeping the Moon is more of a friendship based/ self0discovery type of book, which I’m not going to to lie, I’m not a fan of, so that immediately brings down my rating. There was a little bit of romance, but for a Sarah Dessen book I thought it was pretty bland. The content was just very boring as well, nothing really happened. Normally in her books, the characters have some major flaw they need to overcome and they go through some big life changing experience and start seeing the word differently etc. but this book didn’t really have that. Yes, the main character did go through some development, but it was minor. As in, she was a 15 year old with no friends, she goes to stay with her over weight aunty for the holidays because her mother is going on a cruise or something. She is then hating life because she’s bored and doesn’t want to be there etc. etc. and then she gets herself a job at a diner, some stuff happens a girl is really bitchy to her and then she becomes friend with her. Slight romance, they all live happily ever after. Sounds confusing? Boring? That is literally all that happened in the book… Sorry if that’s a spoiler but honestly, I don’t think this book even has any spoilers.
Very disappointed. I won’t give up on Sarah though, I’m still on the ship, it has not yet set sail. I just hope the next book I read of hers will not be such a letdown. If you have any suggestions on which Sarah Dessen book I should read, please let me know! (I’ve read Lock and Key and Just Listen, which If you haven’t already read, they were excellent books)
I will also say though, the main character in this book (I cannot for the life of me remember her name) is fifteen years old. Which isn’t very young, but I just thought I would mention it because I’m not sure if that was a factor that played into me not enjoying this book.
You’ll like this if you like… books that focus on friendship and “finding yourself”.
