Colleen Hoover has done it again. I think this may just be my favourite Colleen Hoover book I've ever read, and I am not saying this lightly. I highly urge you all to go out and buy a copy so that you can experience this amazing book for yourself - Le Book Chronicles
As soon as I heard (more like read) that this book was even going to be a thing I wanted needed it. Then I was lucky enough to be sent a review copy and I was so excited. I’m not even exaggerating, I was very excited. Anyway, I was putting off reading it since I got it back in early October because I couldn’t share a review until November 9th and there was no way I could wait that long. Anyway, on the night of the 8th I picked it up and put it down in the early hours of the 9th. I was not disappointed.
I was just thinking the other day that I haven't given a book five stars in a long time. I thought maybe I was too harsh, and maybe all these books I’ve been reading have deserved 5/5 but I’ve been too stingy with my stars. But, after reading November 9 I remembered what a 5 star book looks and feels like. And this was most definitely a five star read.
Hoover has written two amazing characters with such depth, without even trying. You don’t get to learn much about their lives, since the book focuses on one day a year, but you feel like you know them so well. Ben and Fallon’s relationship was on point. There was a perfect mix of romance, suspense and heartbreak. And their personalities were so well developed. Just by the way they each thought fit so well with their character.
The fact that Fallon was a book lover, and this was incorporated so well throughout the novel. The little dig at all the people who call romance novels “trashy” was just perfect. I loved that Hoover recognised this and all of the controversy surrounding it. I don't think I've ever read a book where the main character enjoys reading romance novels and isn't ashamed of it. I know there's a lot of books where characters like reading, but usually they only enjoy admit to enjoying the classics. It just made me enjoy this book that much more.
November 9 addressed every single thing I despise in romance novels. Fallon and Ben talk about the things they don’t like in romance novels and then compare it to their relationship and point out their own flaws. I really loved that because it saves me from complaining about the insta-love because they already did.
There was the perfect amount of heartbreak in the story. And so many twists that I definitely didn't see coming. Usually with romance books you can predict certain things that we're going to happen, and while I did guess a couple of them, all of the main ones were such a shock. I don't normally get that emotionally invested in books but I literally had to put the book down. I never have to do that. And there may have been a time or two where I did indeed tear up a little bit. Which also rarely happens to me.
I didn’t include everything I loved because if I did, this review would be way too long (it’s already over a page long as it is. But trust me when I say that this book is amazing. Honestly, I feel like November 9 has it all. It is funny, romantic, shocking, heartbreaking and addicting. Basically it was everything you can expect from a Colleen Hoover novel, and more! If you like Colleen Hoover (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), or if you like romance books at all, then this is a must read for you. I highly, HIGHLY recommend.
My one and only complaint about this book is that there wasn’t enough of it! I want more of Ben and Fallon throughout the year. I would love to see Ben’s story November 9 get published. If Rainbow Rowell can publish Carry On and get away with it, Colleen Hoover can publish Ben’s story too!
