WARNING: This review will probably not make any sense. Just sayin'
Ok so first of all I just want to say that I think the story line for this book is amazing. I am not going to try and explain it because I am terrible at summarising but I shall try- total contradiction there! Basically society is split into two blood types, the silvers and the reds. The Silvers are “elite warriors with god-like powers” and the Reds are the commoners slumming’ it under the power of the Silvers. The story then follows Mare Barrow, a 1 year old Red girl who has stuff happen to her so she ends up working for the Silvers and then some cray stuff goes down and that’s all I have to say about that.
Anyway, this book has been getting so much hype on Booktube and Instagram it’s unbelievable. So obviously I was really excited to read it. But I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. I don’t know if it was because my expectations for the book were too high or what, but while the book was good it didn’t exactly blow my mind. Although the more I think about the book, the more I am liking it.
I know people are saying they didn’t like the book because it felt like a bunch of books meshed together but I actually liked it. To me, I feel like it was a bit of Twilight mixed with Throne of Glass and Divergent with the Silvers having special powers (Vampires in Twilight), the whole “fighting” for.. the thing that I can’t say in case of spoilers (from Throne of Glass), and then the division of silvers and reds (the factions from Divergent). I liked all three of those books so it was kind of nice to see it all in one.
I feel like the main thing that ruined this book for me was everyone hyping it up. My expectations for this book were so high, which is really not fair for the book because I think I probably would have really enjoyed it. I really liked Mare, and also Cal but the rest I didn’t really care for.
It was SO slow progressing!! This is what I think actually ruined the book for me. Ignore that last paragraph. But really, the start was good, I really liked it and then it just hit a snag and it took me FOREVER to read it. And then it would pick up and I’d be like “ok, this is getting good” and then it’d get boring. It was like being in a car with someone trying to drive manual for the first time, you know? Stop start, stop start CONSTANTLY. I’m still pissed off if you couldn’t tell. It wasn’t until there was about 50 pages left that it really started getting good.
Overall, I think this book had really good potential, and it wasn’t terrible but I probably won’t continue in the series. Unless it looks really good but I definitely won’t be going off of the hype.
Format: Paperback (AND IT IS MASSIVE)
You might like RED QUEEN if you liked… Throne of Glass, Twilight and/or Divergent
This next part will contain SERIOUS spoilers, like I’m not even kidding. This will literally ruin the book for you if you keep reading. If you want ot be spoiled that’s fine by me but please note, I will not be held responsible for any trauma this may cause. AGAIN I WARN YOU, this will have spoilers…
Spoilers commencing in 5…
Ok I totally saw that whole plot twist coming. Actually, no I didn’t. But I did have suspicions that either Mavon or Cal was going to turn on Mare, and then I got spoiled so that sealed the deal. But then that thing at the end where the Queen made Cal kill the dad?! That was intense! But I really liked it. Honestly that was the best part of the whole book. Also I was kind of let down throughout the whole thing because I was total shipping Cal and Mare and they didn’t even think about getting together until like ¾ of the way through, and now they’ve got the shits with each other and aren’t talking and it just really bugs me. OH AND OMG I totally saw Shade being alive! As soon as they said he was dead I was like “pfft no” and then I thought Cal was going to say something when they left the house and be like “he’s not dead calm your farm” but he didn’t. But yeah, totes guessed that.
