I did it! I finally picked up The Heir. I had been putting it off for 3 weeks (or more who even knows) because of all the mixed reviews it had been getting. I absolutely loved The Selection series with America and Maxon, so I was a little bit apprehensive about reading this one since this is all about their daughter The Heir but it was amazing. I think part of me enjoying it so much is because 1. My expectations were so low (because I was honestly expecting it to be terrible) and 2. I freaking loved seeing all of my favourite characters from The Selection.
I loved seeing America and Maxon from Eadlyn’s perspective. I’m so happy with how they ended up. Not going to lie, I forgot who half of the characters were so I had to look them up, but I loved seeing Aston and Lucy and Marlee and her kids, oh my god it was just so good.
In saying that, I can see why some people wouldn’t like this book. Eadlyn was so hard to like as a character and I think for those who didn’t like America in The Selection, I think they would downright hate Eadlyn. She is so selfish and narrow-minded. She only thinks about herself, and I think Kile summed it up pretty well “You have a job, just like everybody in the world. Stop acting like it makes you more or less than anyone else”. Her character did develop slightly in in the end, but I think she still has a long way to go.
I also think that the story was very slow. Not much happened really until the very end but I totally did not see that coming so I’m so happy. Usually I guess what’s going to happen in a book so it was such a nice surprise. I’m interested about how the next book will go it’s a shame it doesn’t come out until next year though because I will most definitely forget everything that happened.
I think it was different reading from the Selector’s perspective. I thought it was really difficult to know who the candidates where and who were in the top. In The Selection, it was told from the candidate’s point of views so you got more of an understanding of who they were, than in this book. I think this book would have benefited from alternate point of views (maybe Eadlyn and Kile would have worked). But having said that, I still really liked the story, the characters and the love interests and the background and just everything because Kiera Cass is amazing and I need more.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has read The Selection series. I think a lot of the information would go straight over your heads if you hadn’t read the series beforehand so it’s definitely not one you can read on its own. If you are putting off reading it like I was, just lower your expectations and you’ll love it.
*Possible spoilers about the love interests*
I am #TeamKile all the way, their relationship is so similar to America and Maxon’s. Henri is adorable and hilarious but definitely not husband material. Although I do love Erik, it almost makes it hard to choose between him and Kile.
