It’s been a year since it happened—when Paige Hancock’s first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for two years, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school . . . and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her—the perfect way to convince everyone she’s back to normal. Next: Join a club—simple, it’s high school after all. But when Ryan’s sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team (of all things!) her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live?
This was such a beautiful book! I’ve wanted to read it for a long while and it definitely did not disappoint. I thought it was going to be very sad, but it wasn’t at all. I mean it had its moments but it was just… beautiful. Im not sure of how else I can describe it really.
The start of the book was a little bit slow and boring at times, but about 70 pages in it began to get really good. This may or may not be when Max was introduced (I quite liked Max).
I really loved Paige, I thought she was very easy to relate to and I feel like I would do the exact same thing she did in the same situation. She really went through some character development, and I liked that it didn’t happen all at once like with some books.
The romance was slow building, and not instant which I really really liked as it was much more realistic. The constant little references to pop culture was really nice as well. I was speaking to a friend about this the other day, but when books have references to current situations or events, it just makes it seem more real.
All of the other characters were also really well developed. This was just a very well written book and I would most definitely recommend to anyone that is considering reading it. Now I shall go find everything Emery Lord has ever written, because damn she’s a good writer!
Max and Paige’s friendship was so sweet. I loved how they began as friends and had all their little inside jokes and stuff. It was just a very cute little romance. And you know at the beginning that it’s going to be Max that she ends up with, but the little journey they take to get there was slightly unpredictable which was really nice. And aw man that postcard thing at the end?!!? So cute I nearly cried!
Ugh and I loved when it came out that Max had knew the whole time about Aaron but he treated her normally anyway. It was such a nice moment!
Format: eBook, 293 pages
Favourite Quote: [Max on rereading books with sad endings] “The point is that we already know it doesn’t work out, but we reread them anyway, because the good stuff that comes before the ending is worth it” AMEN BROTHER!
