What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend?
If you're Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane's in the military and away for long periods helps-but when tragedy strikes, everything changes.
Wow. This book was way better than anything I was expecting. I had read a review of someone I follow on Goodreads and they absolutely loved it! Ever since I read their review I had been dying to read it, although as the time passed I was growing less and less confident that I would actually like the story. It is definitely not something I would normally pick up, just from reading the blurb it sounds like too much heart ache. but man it was worth it.
I removed most of the actual blurb as I felt it contained quite a few spoilers, and I would highly recommend going into the story not knowing much. I started reading this at about 1am after finishing another (not so great) book, and next thing I knew it was like 5 am and I didn't want to stop reading! The first 70% of the book was so damn gripping, I couldn't put it down and if I didn't have to sleep, I would have read it straight through in one go. I was just obsessed.
It was such an emotional story and I feel like it had me on an emotional roller coaster, one minute I'd be laughing out loud and next minute I'd be crying! I loved reading about the kids (although it wasn't until the end when i actually figured out who was who).
My only issue with the story was about 70% in when there was a bit of a time jump. There wasn't necessarily a jump but about 6 months was just skimmed over (which I understood why) but once that happened it made me kind of detached from a certain thing that was happening that I won't talk about because spoilers. And then there were a few character decisions that were made that I absolutely did not agree with and I felt like certain characters forgave way too easily to be believable in that situation.I hope this makes sense but I can't really go into any more detail.
I also thought the ending was slightly rushed and I didn't feel like they got the ending they deserved. Of course I was happy with the ending, but after all of the build up and the back and forth, I felt like I needed more. But that epilogue though was so damn cute I cannot even. AND OMG I just have to mention the socks scene!!! When Shane (the Dad) gets deployed, he gets each of his kids to give him one sock to take with him. I don't know bout you but I thought that was so cute!
I was surprised (but happy) to find that it was told from alternating point of views. Alternate perspectives are some of my favourite books and I love being able to see two sides to the story, especially when it is done well (as Nicole Jacquelyn has done).
I had never read anything by Nicole Jacquelyn before and I was very surprised with how much I liked her writing style. I'm looking forward to reading her other books and I'm particularly anticipating the next book in this series. Even though I'm not really sure how I feel about the two characters the net book follows, I'm sure I'll love them.
Overall I loved this book! I loved the relationship and how unique it was. I had never read anything like this, and I had never read anything based around a military family and I am surprised to find that I actually really liked it! The family and relationship dynamic was fantastic and I just cannot recommend this book enough.
