I honestly think the best books are those you start reading on a whim. I didn’t intend on reading this. Last night I couldn’t sleep and I had just received an email from Sourcebooks Fire saying my request for What you left Behind had been approved so I began reading it right away. And after the slump I've been in lately, this was just what I needed.
I didn’t really know what this was about, but I liked the cover which is what drew me to the book in the first place. I thought it touched some very sensitive and controversial topics in a very sensitive way, and it was done very well in my opinion. The story is about 17 year old Ryden who’s girlfriend has just died from cancer, leaving him with a new born daughter to look after (who he resents because he didn’t want her to keep the baby in the first place). The book then shows how Ryden is dealing with the death of his girlfriend, looking after his baby all while balancing soccer, school and work all at the same time. I really liked how this book didn’t glorify teen pregnancy. It really shows you the sacrifices that need to be made, and how hard it can be to make those at such a young age.
The characters were all very well developed, I felt like I really connected with them and actually liked them all. I also really liked how everything was nicely wrapped up, but not so nicely wrapped up that it seemed fake. It was interesting seeing the book told from a male’s perspective. With most YA contemporary novels, it’s told from a female’s point of view so this was a really refreshing change.
Overall, this seemed like a very realistic novel about very real issues. I would definitely recommend this. I do have one bone to pick though. In the book it states quite a few times that Ryder has long hair yet the guy on the front cover clearly has short hair! Now, I don't like long hair on guys so I am completely fine with that but still. Doesn't really effect my opinion of the book but thought I would mention it anyway.
