There’s a lot of good YA books out there, so I’ve narrowed it down to just 10. I’ve tried to pick books that aren’t as popular as some other YA so I hope you are able to find some new books to read :)
My first recommendation is Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. I read this a very long time ago, but I remember really enjoying it. Speak is about a young girl who calls the cops at a party and is now a social pariah at her school. Other stuff happens that I can't say because of spoilers but yeah. The movie is also really good, if you're interested in the book but aren't sure if you want to read the book, check out the movie first.
This next series was one of my favourites when I was in high school. I’ve only read the first 4 but I’ve been collecting them so I hope to continue the series eventually (it’s a massive series though). Sweet Valley High by Fancis Pascall is about a pair of teenage twin girls and their life in high school. It might not sound that interesting, but a lot of stuff happens in these books and they were so addicting. I was devastated when my book store stopped ordering them in.
One by Sarah Crossan is a new favourite of mine. The whole book was written in verse, which at first was a little confusing, but after a few pages I got the hang of it and ended up thoroughly enjoy it. One is about a pair of conjoined twins who after being home schooled their whole life, get sent to a regular high school. This book was fantastic and I cannot recommend it enough.
This next recommendation is a must read for all young adults in my opinion. Risk by Fleur Ferris is an amazing debut novel which follows two teenage girls who meet an online predator, and the repercussions of some bad choices. It really opens your eyes to the danger of being on the internet, especially as teenage girls.
Confessions of an Angry Girl by Louise Rozett is another amazing young adult novel that doesn't get nearly enough attention. I swear no one has even read it and it makes me so sad. Confessions of an Angry Girl is about a young girl Rose who's dad has died and she is trying to deal with all of the changes this has brought to her family and dealing with all the pent up anger she feels since his death. It's not as depressing as it sounds though I promise and I highly highly recommend it. My older sister also read it and enjoyed it even more than me.
The Program by Suzanne Young was probably very popular when it first came out, but I haven't heard many people talk about it in the last year so I thought I would mention it here. The Program gives a really interesting take on a YA dystopian where teen suicide is an epidemic and therefore if anyone shows symptoms of depression, they are taken away to have their memories wiped of any negative thoughts. I really enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to continuing this series.
Before I Die by Jenny Downham is for fans of The Fault in Our Stars. I never expected to love this book as much as I did. It was beautiful and heartbreaking, and I felt the same way about this book as many people did about The Fault in Our Starts. Before I Die is about a young girl who has been diagnosed with cancer. She then makes a bucket list of sorts and along the way she encounters some struggles as well as new relationships. It's just a really good book and if you haven't. definitely read it.
This last one I'm going to recommend is one of my all time favourite books. I don't think it would be for everyone and it is very cheesy at times but The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg was absolutely amazing. It is about Brie who literally dies of a broken heart. She is then goes to "the afterlife" of sorts where she meets Patrick (who is amazingly hilarious). She then has to work through the 5 stages of grief before she can officially move on, and along the way she discovers certain things about herself that change her perspective on life. It has such an amazing mix of contemporary feel with some sort of magical realism? I'm not even sure what you would call it. If you only read one book from this list of recommendations, make it this one. I can guarantee you will love it, and if you don't you can come back here and abuse me, I can take it. Nicky this is another one you have to read! (and then I'lll read Princess Diaries 2 :P).
Let me know if you have any YA recommendations or your thoughts of any of these if you've read them!
