This blog post is bought to you by a rude comment on Instagram.
So the other day I posted a picture of my bookshelves on Instagram. Mind you I only posted one of my shelves but anyway. Someone commented saying , and I quote, “Where tf is Harry Potter? Why tf don’t you own Harry Potter? You can’t be a book fan and not own Harry Potter. Smh. You”. When I read that I literally laughed out loud. How can someone even say that? Also for those of you who aren’t down with the lingo TF= The F**K and SMH=Shake My Head.
Little does the person know, I actually do own Harry Potter. I haven’t read it, and I don’t intend on reading it but I own it. So that backfired on them! But still it made me think how can someone judge whether or not someone is a fan of books depending on the books they read. I mean, as soon as you walk into my room you can tell I’m a book fan without even knowing what I’ve read due to the amount of books I actually own. But nevertheless, I see so many people getting these sorts of messages because of what they read or what they don’t read, and it’s just wrong. Romance books often get a lot of criticism because ignorant people assume it is just sex. But it’s not. Unless you read Mills and Boon (which I haven’t so I can’t really say for sure), but even those have stories behind them.
I just don’t think anyone should be judged by what they read. I know people who love twilight, but they hide it and pretend they hate it like everyone else because of the criticism they receive for liking it. I also know people who loved Twilight in high school but now they pretend like they hate it and it’s the worst series on the planet. How? I just don’t understand that logic.
Either way, no matter what you read, reading is educational. There’s always new words or new stories and things you would never have known before. For example, in Anna and the French Kiss they speak about all of these famous places in Paris that I had no idea even existed. But since reading it, the amount of times they’ve popped up in conversation is unbelievable. And to think if I hadn’t of read that book, I would never have known what the hell these people were talking about!
Anyway, I don’t really have that much to say about that. I just wanted to write my experience down so I can always remember the absurdity of it. Also I did reply to this person telling them I did in fact own Harry Potter, but they didn’t respond. Shocked!
