Blurb: From Kiera Cass, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Selection series, comes a captivating stand-alone fantasy romance.
Kahlen is a Siren, bound to serve the Ocean by luring humans to watery graves with her voice, which is deadly to any human who hears it. Akinli is human—a kind, handsome boy who's everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. Falling in love puts them both in danger . . . but Kahlen can't bear to stay away. Will she risk everything to follow her heart?
The Siren was previously self-published; this brand-new edition has been completely rewritten and redesigned.
Review: The Selection series is one of my favourite book series ever, so because of this I feel like The Siren was being held up to some pretty high expectations. Having said that, I really enjoyed this book. For the most part.
So as I said before, I did really enjoy this book. But I felt like for the first half, it was fairly slow. It was still entertaining but it wasn't necessarily sitting on the edge of your seat page turning kind of stuff.
Another thing I would have liked is more of the story. I felt like everything happened very quickly. I can completely understand why, but I was just wanting more. Though I can definitely see why this is a stand alone novel, and I can see how it would become very boring if it were a series.
With the romance I found that there wasn't nearly as much as I was expecting, which I was a little bit disappointed by. Especially considering this is a stand alone book, and it is the same author of The Selection. I was definitely wanting more relationship building, and more romancey stuff in general. I also felt like I didn't get to know the love interest very well, so I didn't have that emotional investment in him. I did still really like hi don't get me wrong, and I really liked them together and the romance that they had, I was just expecting more.
On to the things I liked! I loved the story line. I don't want to say what it was because I don't want to give any spoilers away, but it was goooood! I found it really interesting reading about a Siren. And for someone who doesn't know much about mythology and isn't really interested in it, I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it. After about the 1/4 mark I found myself completely invested in the story and I couldn't put it down. I will say the second half of this book was definitely much better than the first. You start to learn a little bit more about the characters, the world and just other little things that really make it such an enjoyable read.
I also found myself really satisfied with the ending. I was worried that because it wasn't a series I would be left wanting more, but I feel very content with how it all ended. I would love to see a novel from one of the other Siren's perspectives about what happens after this book ends. Or Aisling!!! (She is an older Siren that is in this book) OMG I would love to read about her so much, someone please make that happen?!?
Overall I really enjoyed this book. A little slow at places and the romance is definitely not as heavy as it is in The Selection, but it was still sweet nonetheless. I simply loved the story line and the romance aspect to it. If you want a light, fantasy read (which for me is the only kind of fantasy I like) this is definitely for you. It's very quick and easy to get through and the story flows really well.
