This tag has been going around BookTube for a while now and I just love watching them. So since I’m a true pessimist and love talking about unpopular opinions, I thought I’d do it on le blog. I wasn’t tagged, but YOLO!
Popular Book or Series that you didn’t like
I thought about this for a while, and I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this quite a few times on my blog but I just couldn’t not mention The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. Everyone freaking loves this book, I swear I haven’t seen one single person say they didn’t like it. I won’t go into it because we don’t have all day, but you can read my review here.
A Popular Book or series everyone else seems to hate but you love
I haven’t read many book series, but honestly everyone hates the Twilight series. And most of the people who hate it, haven’t even read it, which I just don’t get?? And then people who used to like it decide to get on the bandwagon and “hate” it too. I just don’t get it. But anyway, the Twilight series gets a lot of hate and I’m not ashamed to admit that I loved this series when I was in high school. (literally, I was obsessed). I haven’t read it in a while, so I may not like it as much, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.
A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn people for spoilers).
This doesn’t happen to me to be honest. I usually always root for the character that the author is kind of pushing for, cha feel? I know a lot of people love Aspen from The Selection, but I honestly didn’t see any other choice than Maxon. Same thing with Twilight. How is Jacob even an option? Just no.
I’m not sure if it counts as I’ve only read the first book, but with Throne of Glass I was shipping a certain two characters and then I came across a spoiler for something in Queen of Shadows which completely ruined that. So needless to say I’m not going to finish that series now.
A popular book genre you hardly reach for
This may be one of my most unpopular onions but this is hands down Fantasy. I just can’t get into it (although I haven’t tried that hard if I’m honest). I find the plots interesting, but I just don’t have the attention span, or the interest to get into it. I’ve read a couple of fantasy books and they have been ok but to me, nothing is better than contemporary.
A popular or beloved character that you do not like
Kath from Fangirl. Everyone loves her, but honestly I really didn’t. I thought she was mean and she just wasn’t what I was expecting. Another one would be Triss from Divergent. Everyone was saying how selfless and nice she was but to be honest I thought she was a selfish bitch. She was so rude to her friends and just a bitch in general.
A popular author that you can’t seem to get into
John Green. I’ve read Looking for Alaska and part of An Abundance of Katherines but I just cannot get into his writing style. I feel like it’s just too pretentious, and considering he writes Young Adult, I find it hard to believe any 15-18 year old would ever speak like that. I also just don’t like his characters, they’re just not for me. I might try and read The Fault in Our Stars one day since I liked the movie, but it’s not very high on my TBR.
A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing
Love triangles. I mean, if they are done well I don’t mind them. But I just don’t see the point of them, why chuck in a second love interest when everyone knows who they’re going to end up with? They just really make me angry.
A popular series that you have no interest in reading
If anyone was going to get mad while reading this post, this will be the time. There’s quite a few series that I won’t read that everyone absolutely loves. There’s, The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, Game of Thrones, Outlander, Percy Jackson, Throne of Glass, oh and Harry Potter. If you couldn’t tell, there’s sort of a theme here. They’re all fantasy, and Terri doesn’t do fantasy. Don’t even try and make me do fantasy because it’s not happening. Soz not soz.
The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or TV show adaption do you prefer more than the book?
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. I loved that movie, it was so heartbreaking, but it was still a good movie. When I picked up the book though, while it was a good book I was still slightly disappointed. I wasn’t as emotionally invested as I was with the movie, and it just changed the reading experience for me I think.
So, if you’ve stuck around to the end of that post without wanting to kill me then go you! I’d love to hear some of your unpopular opinions, so feel free to leave a comment! If you’re reading this in the email, click here to leave a comment. Thanks for reading :)
